TPCGS GENERAL MEETING
January 9, 2024
Just prior to the meeting, members already on Zoom chatted about their immigrant ancestors, when they emigrated and where they were from. Also, where they immigrated to in the U.S.
The meeting was called to order at 6:15 by President Tim Ward. He greeted those members on Zoom and introduced those at the Parkland-Spanaway Library.
Tim asked the members on Zoom if the speaker phone sound quality was better than the quality at previous hybrid meetings. He had purchased the system from Amazon and had until Jan. 31, 2024, to return it, if unacceptable. All present on Zoom, including a quorum of TPCGS board members, said it was better and we should keep it. The board members authorized Tim’s reimbursement.
Tim announced the program, Tracing migrating ancestors: Who, what, where, when, why and how, a Legacy Family Tree free webinar. The speaker was Mike Clelland. Tim had printed several of the handouts for members present at the library and mentioned that it was available online for those members attending.
The presentation included an interesting brief history of migration theory and reviewed Ernst G. Ravenstein’s seven Laws of migration. One interesting fact mentioned was that “People are more willing to travel long distances to occupy unsettled land, than they would in a country more fully settled.” Push and pull factors were mentioned, as well as governmental schemes to encourage people to migrate.
When the webinar finished, Tim told us about the many free Legacy webinars, gave the website address and reiterated the possibility of joining for 50% off as a TPCGS member.
Melody offered some questions to encourage participants to consider their immigrant ancestors situations, reason for migrating and travels.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. in order to vacate the library meeting room by 8 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
